Pet Dentistry

Routine (yearly) dental cleaning is of the best ways to keep your pet healthy. Periodontal disease is caused by plaque (bacteria), which starts as a thin film on the teeth (Stage I). If left untreated, Stage I periodontal diseases progresses to gingivitis, tooth decay, root abscessation, and bone infection.

Signs of periodontal disease include bad breath (halitosis), discolored teeth, oral pain and difficulty chewing. Chronic periodontal disease can result have systemic effects, adversely affecting the kidney, liver and heart. Taos Veterinary Clinic offers dental cleanings and periodontal treatments for the severely diseased mouth (gingivitis, abscessed roots, fractured teeth, etc).

A thorough dental assessment and all dental procedures in cats and dogs must be performed under general anesthesia; pre-anesthetic blood screening, advanced anesthetic monitoring, and IV catheter and fluid support are all supportive in making general anesthesia as safe as possible.
